Association of Shock:
*high fever
*low BP
*Nausea, dizziness, fainting
*generalized pain
Can lead to death or organ failure
Ex. Septic Shock – bacteria growing in blood= septicemia
Inflammation= general response to injury in which the goal is to get immune system cells to the site of injury
1). Blood vessel cells shrink; making vessels in an area of injury leaky
2). Increase blood flow to site of injury
3). Pain signal- stop re-injury
Bacterial components that – inflammation
• LTA
• Lipid A of LPS
• Superantigens- a bunch of bacterial proteins that kick off VERY aggressive inflammatory responses
o Es. Toxic shock syndrome toxin 1- (TSST -1)
o Produced by some S aureus
Hydrostatic/ atmospheric pressure:
• Bacteria we usually come into contact w/ best adapted to 1 atm. (pressure or world’s atmosphere on you at sea level)
• Some bacteria live @ bottom of ocean, etc. –these adapted to much greater hydrostatic pressures
Proteins!
• Complex: made of 20 amino acids
• Mainly what all living things are made of
• This is why proteins should be molecule of inheritance
o Chemical containing instructions for how to make new org.
DNA:
• Simple only has 4 components bases
• A tiny minority of stuff organisms are made of
