I thought it was interesting that it takes about 10,000 compounds just to make 1 drug. This process can take up to 16 years and cost over $2 million dollars. The Drug Company can also loose up to 2$ million dollars a day from the time the drug is patent. This can explain the reason for the high prices we pay for drugs today.
I agree, we should probably skip all the rigorous testing phases there are and just throw the untested drugs at patients and hope for the best. This outta reduce costs and heck, if were producing 10,000 new compounds every 16 years we can kiss resistance goodbye.
On the other hand I like living so maybe things are good just the way they are. Who knows….

Who said anything about wanting to skip the testing phases? …
We aren't producing 10,000 new compounds every 16 years, it takes 10,000 compounds to make one drug that takes 16 years to be formed. This is why resistance is so high and we can't just instantly form new drugs. And skipping testing phases would definitely not be a good idea!
I had no idea that you don't have to have an MD to do clinical research. I liked how Natalie talked about the different steps it takes to get an antibiotic on the market. Now I understand why it takes so long and so much money to create an antibiotic.

HA it was sarcasim cause the original reply made it sound like it costs a lot of money, we def. should not skip any testing phases at all. :)

No one said anything about skipping testing phases at all..where are you getting that? The first post simply states why the process takes so long due to all the testing phases that are done.
I also thought this speaker was very interesting and the cost of the research surprised me as well. This explains why we need to have so many people working on testing and why they need some federal funding.
On a side note…let's try to keep sarcatic comments off of wiki..it's lame
